Whilst Chateau Latour gave the fine wine market something to sing about these last few days with its 2003 ex-chateau release, the market saw some of its strongest declines in recent weeks. The bid to offer ratio slipped to 1.94:1, the result of a decline of 13% in bid value to a low not seen since September last year and with Asian demand falling in recent weeks. Offer value also fell 9.2% back to levels at this time in 2014.
Trading this week has centered on mid-price wines such as Calon Segur, Leoville Barton, Lascombes, Leoville Poyferre and Pontet Canet albeit with a mixture of results against their last traded prices.
Trade highlights of the week:
- Biggest Climber – Pontet Canet 2004 at £485 + 5.4% since 04/11/14
- Pavillon Rouge 2008 at £975 + 5.4% since 12/12/14
- Pontet Canet 2005 at £960 + 3.2% since 03/02/15
- Biggest Faller – Pavie 2007 at £1,390 – 6.1% since 05/01/15
- Leoville Barton 2003 at £670 – 2.9% since 04/03/15
- Leoville Barton 2004 at £430 – 2.3% since 14/01/15
Although activity declined with offers and bids being refreshed and tightened, £330,000 of new positions were added through the week. Bidders are looking for Super Tuscan stocks alongside First Growths at slightly lower levels than previous months. Do check out the latest additions on the attached lists as well as hot bids to see where opportunities still remain high to market.
There have been a number of well-priced portfolios added in the last few days containing a good proportion of Bordeaux classed growths from classic drinking vintages priced between £200 to £900 per dozen. Certainly worth investigating to pick the best from the new bunch.
Sotheby’s holds its latest DRC auction on the 25th of March with premium prices still expected to be achieved across the majority of lots. For those DRC buyers amongst our members who are wishing to escape the large hammer premiums, you may wish to have a look at a great collection of DRC stocks currently on offer. All stocks have been fastidiously purchased and stored over the past 10 years with great provenance in unopened original cases. You may view the entire collection on offer here
