Whilst the 2013 En Primeur campaign continued this week with further big name releases, the trading of back vintage First Growths continued on Cavex. Mouton Rothschild maintained its top spot trading multiple times with 2002 at £2,700 (12), 2003 at £3,180 (12), 2004 at £2,750 (12), 2005 at £3,600 (12) and 2007 at £2,700. Lafite Rothschild 2008 recorded a further drop of 5.1% in nine days since its last trade down to £5,030 per 12. Chateau Margaux has performed slightly better with 2006 trading down 0.9% since the start of April, with 2008 and 2009 both trading flat at £2,700 and £2,650 respectively.
Outside of Bordeaux, Burgundy has been trading regularly with Hudelot Noellat proving most popular alongside Confuron-Cotetidot and DRC. Another record was set at Cavex this week proving to our members there are great value wines to be picked up at all price levels. The lowest traded value per case to date was a nine case parcel of Craneford John Zilm Merlot 2002 traded for just £20 IB per dozen. There are currently 191 cases offered under £110 per dozen IB, so it’s worth visiting Caves to see what is available via the linked stock lists below. High pointed wines for under £14 duty and Vat when taken out of your bond post delivery surely warrant a closer look?
Although attention in the Fine Wine market has been focussed chiefly on the new Chateaux releases of 2013 and discussions surrounding opportunities missed at reigniting interest in the En Primeur market, our bidders have been out in force again with a rise in bid value of 6.89% this week. Total bids have grown to £2.34 million since Easter Sunday alone, with First growths continuing to attract the majority of activity. Sellers have been somewhat less active allowing the bid to offer ratio to rise up to 1.27:1 after a fall the previous week. Total positions value remains at £4.11 million spread over 1300 markets.
Hot stocks this week centre on some great value wines with Rostaing’s Ampodium and Landonne 2011’s keenly priced alongside Grand Veneur’s CNDP 2010 at £95 per six which, at 93pts from the Wine Advocate, is very good value indeed. Chateau Latour 2000 offered at £7,400 per dozen (cheapest in the UK by some margin) is certainly worth consideration. Finally, buyers are also looking for quantities of Mouton Rothschild so if you do have stocks to offer, there are some keenly priced bids waiting to be matched.
