Overall positions declined as the week came to a close with the market down 1.66% in total value to £5.1 million. Perhaps it was somewhat predictable, with the majority of the worlds Bordeaux buyers heading out to taste the 2014 Primeurs. Whilst there is an air of optimism regarding the quality of the vintage, the big talking point will no doubt be the price. Will the Bordelaise take heed of merchants concerns? Even with US buyers seemingly back with interest for the first time since 2010 only time will tell if the market will get a successful campaign to trade. Cavex will certainly be keeping an eye on the physical vintages keeping our members updated on where value lies in readily available wines as releases appear over the coming months.
The majority of wines exchanged throughout the week either traded flat or had a small decline from their last recorded prices. Less stellar vintages saw most activity although speculation of the 2005 vintage continues albeit with mixed results.
Trade highlights of the week:
- Biggest Climber – Pichon Baron 2005 12 x 75 at £925 + 5.7% since 18/12/14
- La Mission Haut Brion 2006 12 x 75 at £1,265 + 5.4% since 08/01/15
- Ausone 1998 12 x 75 at £3,350 + 1.55 since 25/11/14
- Biggest Faller – Sassicaia 2009 6 x 75 at £450 – 10% since 23/04/14
- Kiran 2003 12 x 75 at £320 – 8.6% since 02/09/14
- Carruades de Lafite 2008 12 x 75 at £1,450 – 4.6% since 04/03/15
Bidding activity continues its focus on mid-range Bordeaux with 2nd to 5th growths in demand. Although Right Bank wines have recently taken a back seat with infrequent trading, it’s coincidental that a tasting of the St Emilion A’s was conducted showing not all are on the same level as perhaps they should be.
Auction sales have been highlighting strong performance again with DRC and Petrus stocks recording the best of the big ticket items at Sotheby’s recent sale, though German wines performed strongly too. DRC collectors can still find a very attractive collection offered for sale on the Cavex exchange using the following link here
Finally, for members based in London or who regularly travel to the city and enjoy socialising with like-minded Oenophiles, we would like to mention the up-coming launch of a new private members club. Opening in July 2015, 67 Pall Mall based in the heart of St James’ will be a dedicated wine lovers haven. Membership is closing fast so do register your interest on the website and Founder and CEO Grant Ashton, a good friend of Cavex, will be happy to hear from you. We will hopefully bump into some of you there for a glass of something special over the summer!
