January has proved to be another bumper start to the year at Cavex with record volumes of trade on the exchange. As many sellers look to clear stocks they’re meeting very keen and willing buyers in Asia who are stocking up for Chinese New Year, which this year falls on Thursday the 19th of February. Shipping deadlines are upon us with the majority of final shipments due to exit the UK this week, save a few last minute purchases. As a seller, if you wish to relinquish stocks, this is the week to get the stock matched.
Since our last update, activity on the exchange has been electric with just shy of £1 million of positions placed in the last three weeks. Total positions amount to £6.5 million with bidding activity up 5% with over 4,100 cases now looking to be purchased. Bidders are keen to find stocks of Haut Brion, La Mission Haut Brion, Lafite Rothschild, Lynch Bages, Mouton Rothschild and Smith Haut Lafitte. Whilst Bordeaux has taken centre stage this month, buyers are equally on the look out for Domaines’ Dujac and Rousseau from Burgundy. If you hold stocks of any of these wines and are interested in selling, then please get in touch on trading@cavex.co.uk and we’ll happily provide bid information as required.
The next couple of weeks will be a good indicator to see if price stability has returned to the fine wine market or whether trading activity has purely been skewed by CNY demand. Whilst we have seen some noticeable price rises in the last three to five weeks, trades during the past seven days have shown that not all prices are rising. Noted fallers have been Ausone 1999 down 6.1% trading at £3,100 per 12, Clinet 2009 down 7.6% to £1,940 per 12, Mouton Rothschild 2009 down 3.2% to £4,350 and Lafite 2009 falling a further 2% trading at £5,980.
Mouton Rothschild 2005 has led the risers consistently since Parker revised his score in December from 96pts to 99+pts. Trading at £3,250 in August, cases are now exchanging at the £4k mark, a rise of 25%. Other 2005’s have also been trading solidly with First growths leading the way alongside well priced 2nd growths such as Montrose 2005 at £860 and stalwarts such as Lynch Bages 2005 trading at £950.
Will this optimism continue into February and March as we head towards EP 2014? The UK trade certainly are hoping for the former with an open letter to the Bordeaux Chateaux asking for sensible pricing. Bordeaux it’s over to you.
