Bidding activity grows in an active week that was not all about First Growths

Activity through this last week has been thick and fast at Cavex with bid and offer notifications passing between members at its highest level since January. Are we seeing the market return to a place where prices are once more at interesting levels for a wider range of buyers? Or is this the storm before the calm of the summer holidays? Most apparent however, is that bidders have been the stronger party throughout the last seven days with an increase of 2.4% in overall bidding activity and total bid value climbing to £1.85 million. This increase has seen the bid to offer ratio continue to escalate to 0.89:1 which is a pleasing sign.

However, sellers have also been very active this week with some great parcels of wines offered. They too helped overall position value grow slightly by 1.2% over the seven day period since our last update. As offers kept being placed, buyers were steadily picking up great deals with a large Chateau Lafite parcel moving through for 2001 at £4,430, 2003 at £4,430, 2003 at £5,730, 2004 at £4,450, 2005 at £5,385 and the 2006 at £4,430. Whilst Lafite prices have been continuing to soften, demand is still noticeable, albeit at the right price.

Unlike the previous week’s trading activity, it’s not been all about the Bordeaux First Growth market. We’ve seen bidders picking up a variety of Bordeaux wines across all levels.

Most notable trades were Cos d’Estournel 2003 trading at £1,150, down 11.5% since December. Leoville Barton 2005 traded at £570, down 12.3% since May, and Montrose 2008 took a heavy fall of 19.8% since February to £445 per 12 whilst the 2009 faired slight better trading at £1,790, down 6.8% since the end of May.

It was equally satisfying to see a few members responding to the weekly update with the Mouton Rothschild 1998 trading at £1,505 per 6 and the Rhone Tardieu Laurent’s CNDP 09′s at £230 per 12 also being picked up. Two very well priced wines that were worth acquiring.

This week’s Hot Bid highlights feature strong bid levels for Beychevelle 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008, Clos Fourtet 2005 and 2009, Ducru Beaucaillou in lesser vintages as well as Duhart Milon.

Sellers this week are looking for willing bidders to snap up some great parcels on offer of Comte de Vogues’ Bonnes Mares 2005 to 2011 and Le Musigny 2009, 2010 and 2011 all at the UK market’s lowest price by some way. There’s also a trio of Hosanna vintages from 2000, 2006 and 2010. At a keen price and whilst the 2010 matures in the cellar, the former vintages should make for most enjoyable drinking.
