2005 Bordeaux prices returning to June levels as other prices begin to slip

Post Parker’s reappraisal at the end of June, it was perhaps to be expected that Bordeaux 2005 prices would quickly return to normal following an initial burst in activity. After all, the same happened recently with the 2012 in-bottle scores, but this time the rally seemed far shorter than most expected. Perhaps it is indicative of current market conditions?

With Europe focusing on Greece and a weakening Euro, it makes sense that worldwide buyers have recently been looking direct to France and other European merchants where more attractive prices are available. However with stock market falls of gigantic proportions occurring in China, which make the Greek deficit look relatively small, Asian buyers have been rather quiet. This has slowed the market down significantly and with sellers being told Fine Wine prices are holding even gaining in places it understandably means some sellers are reluctant to drop their offer prices. With the quiet summer period starting and bidders taking a break whilst markets attempt to stabilise, the next few months are pointing towards a bidder’s market more than a seller’s market. It is our belief that if a bid looks attractive and in range, perhaps a consideration is worth that little bit more contemplation.

Bid value and activity dropped by 2% over the week with Offer value down 4.6% although £250,000 of new positions have been placed.
