2005 Bordeaux dominating activity as stellar vintages hold their prices well

With 24 hours to go until the unveiling of Robert Parker’s “10 years on” for the Bordeaux 2005 vintage, it’s no surprise that activity in this vintage has been on the rise during the past few weeks. Bid value has increased by 7% over the last seven days taking active bids up to the £3.2 million mark as buyers hunt for a 2005 bargain.

Following a fall of 5.5% in offer value during the week, sellers have been a good deal more reserved holding on to stock and waiting patiently for the scores to appear. With the 2005 vintage heralded as the best since 1982 at the time and personal admissions from Parker that he may have been tough on his scores, we should see quite a few upgrades across the full range of wines. It will certainly be wise to keep an eye on the exchange as the scores are published to catch the remaining bargains.

The strength of Sterling has been hindering Asian buyers these last few months making it tougher for exports from the UK. With the Greek debt crisis deepening, further falls for the Euro are likely to push buyers direct to European merchants picking up cheap looking stock. UK stocks will have to counter act this attraction so we expect a small softening in pricing as we hit the summer holiday period.

First rate vintages from Bordeaux have been setting the pace at all levels throughout the week alongside big names such as DRC, Guigal’s La La’s and Opus One. Steady falls have been seen for lesser vintages but there are noticeable bid increases on wines such as Carruades de Lafite as buyers try to find supplies of stock which seem to be dwindling.

Trade highlights of the week:

  • Biggest Climber - Cote Rotie La Turque Guigal 2005 12 x 75 at £3,400 + 13.3% (since 05/11/14)
  • Cote Rotie La Mouline Guigal 2005 12 x 75 at £3,200 + 6.7% (since 14/11/14)
  • Leoville Las Cases 1996 12 x 75 at £1,900 + 5.6% (since 27/06/14)
